I want a new PC in the foreseeable future, so here I am asking for advice

Here's some basic info about my current build
-Processor: i7-7700
-RAM: 32 GB DDR4 (originally they were 16GB, but one module died and I had to buy new ram modules)
-Graphic Card: RTX 3060 (originally it was the GTX 1060 3GB but it died too)
-Motherboard: Asus Z270H
-Case: Zalman Z11 plus. I hate it, it's ugly, I did not chose it (they didn't had in stock the one I bought and gave me that one instead) and cleaning it is a pain in the ass

I'm planning in changing teams, leaving Nvidia, Intel and Windows behind for AMD and Linux

I can't afford a high end PC, but it will be a gaming PC, so let's stay in the middle (more or less in line of what my current build was 6-7 years ago)

The thing is Idk much about AMD (I've been inside the Nvidia bubble for too long), are they going to launch new hardware (procesors and graphic cards) soon? should I wait? will the wait be worth? (yeah, sorry. those are the eternal questions, I know never is the right moment to upgrade)

I DON'T have any interest in most AAA graphic intensive games (like GTA VI) there are some exceptions, (like the next Monster Hunter) but I rarelly play AAA games (In general I'm more into a A or AA games) so here it is possible to cut some corners a little

Ok, those questions were a little bit generic and I can investigate on my own, you can ignore them, but I have some questions a little bit more specific

I have a PCIe 3.0 NVME M.2 SSD and a Samsumg EVO 870 EVO (Sata 2.5'') I'll like to reuse in the new build. would it be possible? are new motherboads (with PCIe 5 or 6) backwards compatible? (asking about the M.2 SSD that uses PCIe 3.0 mainly, the other one is a normal Sata SSD) I plan to buy a newer (and faster) M.2 SSD too, but the extra storage is always welcome even if it's slower

About the case I just want a simple case, easy to clean and as silent as possible (so the bigger the fans the better) with plenty of room inside so it's easy to work with it when I need to do some maintenance like cleaning or replacing something, I don't need RGB nor a glass window nor all the fancy stuff so what do you recommend?

Another dilemma I have is the screen, it's so old it it only has a DVI port!! (SyncMaster BX2335) but still works, is full HD and its size is 23'' I don't have room for a much bigger screen so idk if 1440p or 4k screens are worth, tbh.

nvidia drivers still do not support wayland.

You can definitely run Wayland with an Nvidia GPU. I have on a 3060 Ti, on Debian, before I switched to an AMD card. And I also ran xorg with it.

IIRC Sway, a Wayland compositor that I use, didn’t earlier in the year, back when I tried it, but it’s not the only compositor out there, and I’m guessing – perhaps incorrectly – that if you’re doing the jump from Windows to Linux, that you aren’t concurrently switching to a tiling desktop environment anyway.

Also my current GPU does not have DVI neither (I have a HDMI to DVI cable, so that’s not really a problem) it’s more about missing modern features (like freesync) and the whole pc being “limited” (not in the literal sense, I know monitors don’t cause bottlenecks) by the old screen

Fair enough. Was just saying that if you do want to keep it, you should be able to do so.

@tal

Yeah, you can use wayland on nvidia (like I said wayland give me less headaches than xorg), but the drivers do not support it officially

I posted my issues in the official forums of a couple of linux distros, followed the instructions they gave me and the conclussion was that my speciffic hardware configurarion does not get along with linux for whatever reason

After playing some Starfield, I wish it was less like Fallout with a dash of No Man's Sky and more like Starflight.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Starflight_cover.jpg

Starflight did three things right:

  1. Made space travel meaningful and dangerous: Running into baddies, dangers or simply out of fuel was always possible, but the further you went it was possible to gain better resources.
Flying was also challenging (but fun) when you had to consider gravity and the fact that the ship won't break unless something stops it. So fuel conservation was juggling between all these things.

In fact, landing in a high-gravity planet was not only hard, but in some cases gave one ticket to Pancake'd town.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Starflight_017.PNG

In Starfield, ships are only there as fast travel vehicles. In No Man's Sky, they are more meaningful, though it still feels like a magic plane in a vacuum.

  1. Resource gathering felt like an adventure: In most of these games resource gathering is a chore, something I need to do to build X or buy Y. Starfield had resource-rich planets that were actively dangerous, be it by creatures or by natural phenomena, the buggy would start to take damage and it was a gamble with knowing when to pack up and leave.
NMS gets close but if I spent more time inventory sorting, pressing X for mining a resource and scanning for further resources, I'm not enjoying my time with it.

resources

  1. Alien encounters were tense: The first time I met an alien in Starflight, it was as nerve wrecking, as I could "raise shields" and start combat, but also try figuring out if I could understand them. The crew may (or not) speak partially their language, so they may seem helpful but actually be plotting to shoot you down while your shields are down.

The crew could help these cases when simpathetic aliens were found, or the oposite when they scanned the ship and found their foes.

encounters

But most importantly, all three were part of discovering clues by conversation or exploration, and figure out the mystery before space went boom.

ship

The problem I have with new games is the lack of urgency, I can't believe the main quest if the game invites me to play looter simulator or yet spend another hour mining iron.

It is also 30 years old.

Hey guys/gals, I want your opinion on this:
I was thinking of buying a fractal design north case, and a fractal lumen s28 rgb aio.
According to the manual, the case has clearance for a 355mm gpu. Mine is the msi suprim x 3080ti (336mm). As stated by the graphic in the manual, the gpu clearance is measured with the front fans installed, and I was thinking of installing the radiator in the front. The aio manual says that the radiator is 27mm thick. This means I need another 8mm for this to fit.
I measured my gpu with a ruler and I found out the gpu is actually a bit under 330mm, maybe even 328mm.
This is where I ask for your opinion. Do you guys/gals think this will fit?

Can anyone recommend me a good casual-competitive FPS?

Overwatch was one of my all-time favorite games, but I just don't like OW2. I tried, it's just not the vibe anymore for me. I tried a couple other hero shooters, like Team Fortress 2, which I couldn't really get into. I've been thinking back to when I was last really into a shooter, and it was probably the original Modern Warfare 2 or Black Ops 2. Before that was Halo 3. I did also like Advanced Warfare when that came out.

These days, all of the popular modern shooters seem to be battle royals, which are fine (I liked Apex a lot for a while), but it's not really what I'm looking for. Beyond that, they're often F2P but loaded with microtransactions and shit. I am just so sick of that pricing model, I just want to pretend like it doesn't exist. lol I'm fine buying a game outright, but if there's a bunch of DLC or in-game currency of any kind, I'm out.

I'm also not looking for something like CS where everyone you play with is god-tier and is doing trick shots, cause that's frustrating.

So I guess I'm looking for a classic COD/Battlefield-ish FPS with the modern touches (like leaning around corners, etc.), that's either paid or free but does not paywall any content. It can be newer or older as long as it's not hard to find matches online. I'm also not super picky about art direction, but it'd be cool if it had good graphics.

Aaaand the icing on the cake: if it can run on Linux (natively or via proton), you get infinite bonus points. It's not a total deal-breaker if I have to switch to my Windows partition, but I do prefer Linux.

I know that's a tall order. Is there anything good in 2023 that would check most of these boxes?
